Fire has been used as a management tool for many centuries. With
professional and federal fire training, let EC’s instructors share with you the history and science behind leading a controlled burn and the many biodiversity benefits. Then get your hands on some of the fire tools, such as a drip torch, and assist in a controlled burn with EC’s instructors (if weather permits). Please provide your own mug for hot drinks! Wear: natural fibers such as cotton and wool only (synthetic fibers will melt), gloves, good sturdy shoes, bandana or head cover.

Earth's Classroom was deeply honored this past weekend, during the 30th annual Missouri Environmental Education Association (MEEA) Conference, held in Jefferson City, to be recognized for our work of outdoor education since 1999.
It is a passion of ours to inspire all ages just how unique, phenomenally interesting, and important our natural and cultural resources are. These resources have such fascinating stories. We thoroughly enjoy sharing them.
It was such an honor to be nominated and voted for the Jan Weaver EE Award. Congratulations to all the award recipients. And thank you to MEEA for all your work.

Stream Teams United and Earth's Classroom pulled off the final Paddle MO Event for the year last weekend. Lots of smiles. Lots of learning and sharing. Lots of beautiful water to paddle! We guided about 40 participants for three days down the upper Meramec River to celebrate its known biodiversity.

Elderberries, turtles, and gar, OH MY! Yesterday Earth's Classroom had the pleasure of leading an Ecology Canoe Day-Trip for Rolla Outdoor Collaborative School! They were a fabulous group which included foreign exchange students from Germany and France. What a beautiful day for lots of unique learning in the Ozarks!

Today Earth's Classroom is leading an Ecology Wild Caving Trip. The warm season is closing fast, and the remaining of the fall is mostly booked, but if you want to get your group into any of these educationally-filled adventures for the spring, we recommend reaching out soon!

Earth’s Classroom has been awarded a generous grant from the Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund—an incredible contribution that will make a lasting impact on our mission this year.
This support will allow us to make much-needed updates to our field equipment and, most importantly, expand access to our Field Science Career Experience (FSCE) program. That means more students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in hands-on, outdoor education rooted in science, stewardship, and curiosity.

Within the boundaries of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Earth's Classroom took members from Troop #22 and Pack #22 from Owensville, MO for 4 days on the Jack's Fork River. From the majestic blufflines streaked with oxidized manganese to the bizarre troglobite known as a grotto salamander, much was explored and learned!

A Closer Look at the Prairie
This past week, Erik and Taelor spent time out in our prairies, documenting the plants and insects that call these spaces home. It's part of our ongoing effort to track the biodiversity here at Earth's Classroom and better understand the health of these ecosystems.
We have three major prairies on the property. The oldest has been growing for over 25 years and is a powerful glimpse into what much of Missouri used to look like. Having an established prairie like this brings balance to the landscape. By encouraging native plants and working hard to keep invasive species in check, we create the conditions for a healthy and resilient ecosystem—one where everything from soil microbes to large predators plays a role.
The photos we’re sharing today offer a closer view of the insects we often overlook—pollinators, beetles, and all sorts of life that keep the system running behind the scenes.
A few facts that might surprise you:
– There are over 400 species of bees in Missouri, many of them solitary and ground-nesting.
– Regal fritillary butterflies, once more common across the Midwest, depend on native coneflowers as a vital nectar source during their adult stage.
– Each native plant species supports its own web of insect life, forming the foundation of a much larger food web.
When we care for the prairie, we're caring for all of it—plants, insects, birds, and everything that depends on them. These moments on the land remind us how much life is woven into even the smallest corners.

🌞 Grateful for another amazing day on the Meramec! 🛶
This past Saturday, we had the chance to spend the day on the river with an awesome group from Rolla Outdoor Collaborative School (ROCS). @rollaoutdoorschool_rocs We’re so thankful they chose to spend their day with us, and we loved getting to share the beauty of Missouri’s freshwater streams with such a thoughtful and nature-connected group.
ROCS is all about creating a community where kids and caregivers learn side-by-side in the outdoors—building resilience, independence, and a deep sense of wonder. We saw that mission in action as we floated the Meramec, explored the stream banks, and took time to really observe life beneath the surface.
The day was packed with hands-on ecology fun—snorkeling, casting nets, seining, and learning about the incredible biodiversity in the Meramec Drainage Basin. A stop at a cold spring gave everyone a chance to cool off, splash around, and appreciate one of the natural gifts these streams offer, especially on a hot summer day.

🌊 Ecology Day Canoe Trip Recap! 🛶
This past Tuesday, participants joined Earth’s Classroom for a full day of adventure, discovery, and hands-on learning during our annual Ecology Day Canoe Trip. We paddled the clear waters of the Courtois Creek, Huzzah Creek, and the Meramec River, experiencing firsthand the beauty and biodiversity of Missouri’s Meramec Drainage Basin.
The day began with a canoeing skills and safety course to prepare everyone for the journey ahead. Once on the water, paddlers explored the unique ecosystems of these Ozark streams, where some species exist nowhere else on Earth. With snorkeling masks on, they got a rare view of life below the surface—watching fish, crayfish, and aquatic insects in their natural habitat.
Participants also learned how to throw casting nets, use seines to sample aquatic life, and, of course, took time to splash, swim, and enjoy the cool, clear streams.
It was a day packed with science, exploration, and plenty of fun—a perfect reminder of why protecting these waterways matters. Thanks to everyone who joined us on the water!

This week we had the pleasure of hosting Stream Teams United for a 2-day team-building and professional development retreat here at Earth’s Classroom.
Day 1 featured two of our favorite on-site programs—Missouri Indigenous History and the Southern Fur Trade. The STU crew got hands-on with activities like starting fires using only chert and steel and throwing tomahawks with Wild Bill.
Day 2 took things underground with a wild caving trip into one of our favorite caves at Meramec State Park. We explored formations, talked cave science and geology, and shared what we know about Missouri’s deep underground history.
We’re incredibly grateful for our relationship with Stream Teams United. Not only do they invite us to be the lead educators for their Paddle MO events, but thanks to their AmeriCorps partnership, we’re able to host Taelor and Erik for a full year—helping us expand our reach and impact through outdoor education.

Spring Field Trip Season Recap! 🌿
As the wildflowers bloom and spring winds down, we’re reflecting with full hearts on an unforgettable season of outdoor exploration, discovery, and connection with nature.
This spring, we had the honor of hosting an incredible lineup of schools and civic groups at Earth’s Classroom.
Together, we explored prairies and open woodlands, discovered fascinating aquatic life in our streams, and traveled back in time to uncover the stories of the people who lived here long before European settlement. From Indigenous Peoples History, to the Southern Fur Trade era and to the Civil War, our participants got a hands-on look at Missouri’s rich natural and cultural history.

🦎🐸 Serendipity Day at St. Clair’s Edgar Murray Elementary! 🎉
Jody and Erik had a blast returning to Serendipity Day—an event we’ve proudly been part of for nearly 20 years! We’re always honored to be invited back to share our passion for Missouri’s wild critters with curious young minds.
This year, we brought along some of Missouri’s amazing reptiles and amphibians, teaching students how to identify them by their unique features and even how to recognize their distinctive calls in the wild. From scaly to slimy, the kids got a close-up look at some of the state’s coolest native species!
And as always—no critters were harmed or kept in captivity. We carefully catch these animals just before our programs and return them to the exact spot we found them right after. It’s all about creating meaningful, real-life connections to wildlife while respecting their natural homes. 🌱💚

🕷️ Tarantula Glade Hike Recap! 🌿
Yesterday’s Family/Public Program took us on a wild and unforgettable adventure! Participants hiked to a remote glade to explore the unique habitat of the Texas Brown Tarantula — a species whose range reaches its northeastern edge right here in Missouri.
These fascinating arachnids are much more than meets the eye. As powerful predators, they feed on insects, spiders, and even small reptiles their own size. We also learned about their one-of-a-kind reproductive behaviors and the important role they play in the ecosystem.
Though they may seem intimidating, Texas Brown Tarantulas are actually docile creatures. In the right setting—and when showing no signs of stress or aggression—participants had the incredible opportunity to safely handle these amazing animals!
It was a one-of-a-kind experience for everyone involved, and we’re so grateful to those who joined us for this close encounter with some of Missouri’s most misunderstood residents. 💚

🌿 Spring is in Full Swing at EC! 🌸
Field trips have been rolling right along this past week! We were excited to welcome St. Francis Borgia 5th graders, along with Kindergarten and 1st graders from Hermann. As we move deeper into spring, the EC property is coming to life in such beautiful and powerful ways — it’s truly breathtaking to witness.
The prairies are waking up and starting to bloom with gorgeous spring wildflowers. Reptiles have been volunteering their time for our Herpetology programs, and our streams are teeming with life — it’s just awesome to see.
Borgia’s 5th graders dove into our Missouri Ecology program, exploring the deep natural history of the land we now call Missouri — from historic prairies to open woodlands. They, along with other schools, explored our Aquatics program and found all sorts of cool critters like aquatic insects and crayfish. Other visiting groups took part in some of our other popular programs, including Missouri Native American History, MO Mammals, and more!
We’re so grateful to share this season of renewal and discovery with so many curious young minds.

🌎 Field Trip Season is HERE! 🌞
The last two weeks have been a whirlwind of learning, exploring, and getting our boots wet — in the best way possible!
We were thrilled to welcome students from Sullivan Elementary, South Point Elementary, and Westphalia area schools for a variety of immersive outdoor education programs. From splashing through creeks to stepping back in time, these young explorers got the full EC experience.
🦎 In our Aquatics Program, students discovered the importance of water quality and explored the biodiversity of healthy streams — uncovering aquatic insects, fish, amphibians, and crustaceans, and learning how they all play vital roles in our ecosystems.
🪓 History came alive in our Southern Fur Trade and Civil War programs, where Bill transported students into the past with authentic attire, tools, and even period food!
🧭 And for the first time this year, we ran our Earth’s Magnetism program! Students practiced using a compass, reading topographic maps, and navigating with coordinates. They wrapped it up with an orienteering course across EC property — solving a code using their new navigation skills!
Spring has sprung and we’re just getting started! Thanks to all the schools and students who made the last two weeks unforgettable. 🌿

Yesterday was a day to remember — our biggest fundraiser of the year, the Bourbeuse Bluebell Race, finally happened after being postponed due to flooding just two weeks ago. Despite the unexpected change, our racers showed up in full force, with most still able to participate and many others generously donating their race fees to support Earth’s Classroom. 💚
We are beyond grateful for this community. Your flexibility, enthusiasm, and generosity help keep our mission going strong. The funds raised from this event go directly toward purchasing essential equipment and, most importantly, help us offer our Field Science Career Experience (FSCE) program free of charge to high school students. This program gives students hands-on experience in the natural sciences and inspires the next generation of environmental stewards.
This year’s race drew participants from six states — Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Florida, Kansas, and Minnesota! The feedback is clear: the Bourbeuse River route is absolutely stunning and a one-of-a-kind way to experience one of Missouri’s most biodiverse and healthy streams.
To all the racers, donors, and volunteers — thank you. Your support makes a real impact, and we couldn’t do this without you.

🌿 Growing Together: Professional Development at EC 🌿
On Monday, we had the privilege of hosting outdoor education professionals from across Missouri for Jody’s Fundamental Bedrocks of Interpretation professional development day!
Participants got to witness Bill and Jody in action, showcasing their dynamic teaching methods, followed by an in-depth presentation from Jody on her core “Bedrocks” of outdoor education. To wrap up the day, attendees put their new skills to the test, delivering their own short presentations using the tools they learned.

This past weekend was full of wildlife wonders! 🌿✨
At Earth’s Classroom, we hosted two incredible family programs—Dances with Woodcocks and Salamander Breeding Grounds—giving participants a hands-on, up-close experience with some of Missouri’s most fascinating creatures!
🔹 Dances with Woodcocks: We witnessed the bizarre and mesmerizing courtship display of the American Woodcock! From its unique ground call to its breathtaking aerial spiral, these birds put on quite a show before plummeting back to earth to do it all over again!
🔹 Salamander Breeding Grounds: Guests explored our local Ozark salamanders, learning how to identify species, their habitats, and their breeding cycles. We took a trip to our Herp Pond, where participants got to safely capture, observe, and release both young and adult salamanders—an experience filled with excitement and discovery!

Trading, Weaving, and Tomahawk Throwing!
This week, Earth’s Classroom hit the road to visit Owensville Elementary, Owensville Middle School, and Gerald Elementary, bringing the Southern Fur Trade program to EXCEL afterschool students!
Students stepped back in time to explore the history of European traders and Native Americans, discovering how metalwork changed indigenous cultures and why beaver pelts were once the hottest commodity.
Hands-on activities brought history to life—students learned the art of finger weaving, while older students took on the challenge of tomahawk throwing!
A big THANK YOU to the EXCEL program for having us! We love sharing history in an engaging, hands-on way.

🍁 Maple Syrup Magic at Earth’s Classroom! 🍁
This past weekend, families joined us for a hands-on journey through the history and process of maple syrup making in Missouri! From the traditional knowledge of Indigenous peoples, who relied on maple sap as a vital winter food source, to the rise of the maple industry with European settlers, we explored how this sweet tradition has shaped our region.
Participants learned how to tap trees, gather sap, and boil it down into delicious syrup, discovering the best techniques and equipment for a successful sugaring season. It was a sticky, sweet success!

🌿🔆 Last night, our FSCE students explored Sustainable Technologies, learning how passive and active solar energy can make homes more efficient while saving energy and money.
Bill and Jody encouraged students to think outside the box when it comes to benefiting the environment—sometimes, small changes make a big impact! 🌎
Jody also led a powerful discussion on climate and the human effect, using NASA and NOAA data to show how our planet has changed over the last 800,000 years. A heavy topic, but an inspiring reminder that young people have the power to shift our habits for the better!
Students compared electric bills and identified “energy vampires”—devices that drain power even when turned off—learning practical ways to reduce energy use at home. We wrapped up with simple, sustainable living practices like composting, hang-drying clothes, reducing harsh cleaning supplies, using reusable shopping bags, and prioritizing reducing & reusing before recycling.

Students stepped back in time to explore the life of a Civil War soldier, learning about the clothing, gear, and supplies soldiers carried. One lucky student even dressed in authentic Civil War attire!
A hands-on favorite was candle making—students took turns dipping strings into hot wax, watching as their creations transformed into candles. They also got to sample hardtack, the simple, crunchy staple that soldiers carried to avoid going hungry.

🔥 FSCE in Action! 🔥
This past Sunday, our Field Science Career Experience (FSCE) students dove into Fire Ecology! They kicked off the day learning from Jody about the importance of fire in maintaining ecosystems and how to safely conduct a controlled burn—mastering techniques, terminology, and reading the weather and wind.
Then, they suited up for a hands-on experience! Under the guidance of Bill and Jody, who bring hundreds of hours of certified expertise, the students helped burn 4 acres of prairie and 3 acres of open woodlands. Each student got to use a drip torch, carry water packs, and work with fire suppressors.

“Erik is an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer serving with Earth’s Classroom, where he is committed to expanding environmental education across Missouri. His work includes broadening program reach, aligning lessons with state standards, supporting fundraising and grant writing efforts, and creating outdoor learning opportunities that inspire both students and educators.
Erik’s connection to Earth’s Classroom began with an unforgettable 5th-grade field trip and grew deeper through his participation in the Field Science Career Experience program in 2009. As an Eagle Scout with a passion for outdoor activities like mountain biking, canoeing, hiking, camping, and hunting, Erik has spent countless hours learning from and living in nature. This role has deepened his appreciation for the natural world and fuels his passion for helping others understand and protect our ecosystems.”

“I’m currently serving my second term as an AmeriCorps member at Earth’s Classroom. Prior to this, I completed my first term at Maramec Spring Park in St. James, MO. I’m a college student planning to study Marine Biology and Conservation, with a strong commitment to protecting our planet’s ecosystems. Growing up near Seattle, Washington, I spent a lot of time outdoors—hiking, exploring forests, and looking for wildlife. These experiences, along with learning about different cultures, sparked my love for the natural world and shaped my connection to it.
After spending five years in Phoenix, Arizona, where I graduated high school, I moved to Missouri, where I’ve lived for the past five years. Here, I am also involved with the Conservation Leadership Corps through the Conservation Federation of Missouri, working to protect the state’s natural resources. In my free time, I enjoy spending time in nature, hanging out with family and friends, and taking my dog, Pretzel, on walks. I’m excited to be part of Earth’s Classroom this year, where this experience is deepening my commitment to conservation and environmental education while equipping me with the skills to make a meaningful impact.”

🌿 Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! 🌍
At Earth’s Classroom, we teach students how small changes in their habits can make a big impact on the environment. Our waste disposal station is more than just a trash bin – it’s a learning tool!
Reduce: The best way to fight waste is to avoid it in the first place. If we stopped consuming single-use items, would companies stop production? Or perhaps they’d start creating more sustainable, consumer-friendly products?
Reuse: Clean bags, bottles, and containers can have a second (or third!) life. How many items could you reuse this week instead of tossing?
Recycle: Recycling takes energy and isn’t always perfect, but it’s better than the landfill. Remember, reducing comes first for a reason!
And don’t forget about composting! Organic waste gets turned into rich soil that nourishes plants, completing the natural cycle.
We encourage our participants to bring reusable containers for their lunch and drinks – together, we can make a difference! 🌎

✨ Discovering Indigenous Cultures ✨
This week, 2nd graders from St. James Elementary explored the rich history of Native Americans in Missouri.
Students learned about the many types of lodges Indigenous people used—proving there’s so much more than just tipis! They also discovered how fire was used to enrich soil for growing crops and attract wildlife for hunting.
Another highlight? Learning Indigenous sign languages! Students practiced signs for words like bear, moon, sun, and prairie, - a fascinating way different nations communicated. 🐻🐍

🌿 6th Grade Adventure Day with Wild Bill! 🌿
This past Friday, we had a blast hosting 6th graders from Lonedell Elementary at Earth�’s Classroom! Led by the legendary Wild Bill, the students dove into Missouri Mammals and Southern Fur Trade programs. They explored what makes an animal a mammal, learned to identify native species, and discovered the history of fur trading in the region. And for a true pioneer experience—they got to throw tomahawks! 🪓

🌟 Field Science Certification Experience (FSCE) 🌟
Last night, our amazing high school students dove into Mammalogy for this month’s FSCE session! They explored mammal identification by studying skulls, unique physical traits, and even made plaster casts of animal tracks.
These students were selected for this year-long program to build hands-on skills and earn a Field Science Certification. Each month, they explore a new topic that prepares them for future careers and education. To wrap up the program, they’ll take on a 3-day, 2-night canoe trip to apply everything they’ve learned in the wild. 🚣‍♀️🌲
We’re excited to see what comes of these awesome outdoor enthusiasts!
